Big Hole River 495 cfs
Yesterday was my first guide trip for the season and though a bit cool the fishing was pretty good. It started out slow. We tried streamers with little success and then went to nymphs with a little better action but not much. That’s when I decided to go with some top water action with skwalas. There was no particular reason for going to them other than I had a feeling. Dave in front of the boat didn’t have that pattern on more than five minutes when he connected with the first fish. That being a nice 16 inch brown. I switched Tom’s rig to a skwala also and it didn’t take long before he was getting action.
It wasn’t what you call real hot action but it was steady enough to stay on top water. I tried four different skwala patterns and caught fish on three of the four. The new poly para patterns I got worked the best. All the fish we caught were brown trout except for two rainbows and one cutthroat. The browns especially were quality fish ranging in size from 14 to 20 inches.
Forecast for tomorrow is for quite cool but the rest of the week looks good.
With the warmer weather on the way the fishing should be improving also.
Still haven’t received a report from the guys on Andros Island—maybe the sharks ate em.
