Big Rains and Big Water!

Southwest Montana received a much-needed shot of moisture over the weekend, with the Pioneer Mountains picking up nearly 12 inches of snow and valley locations seeing 3–4 inches of rain. The Big Hole responded in a big way, with flows at Maiden Rock jumping from roughly 730 cfs last Thursday to over 3,100 cfs. Needless to say, we're thrilled to see the river recharge and are looking forward to an excellent July.

Fishing was challenging immediately following the rise in flows, but conditions have improved quickly as the river begins to drop and clear. Water clarity on the upper river is now exceeding three feet in many areas, and the fish seem happy and hungry.

The streamer bite was excellent on the upper river yesterday, with Kreelexes, Sculpin Sparkle

Minnows, and Rusty Trombones leading the charge. Nymphing was also productive throughout the morning, with TJ Hookers, Blowtorches, Duracells, and Frenchies all producing fish.

As afternoon water temperatures warmed, we began finding fish looking up in slower seams and softer water. Dry-dropper rigs remained the most effective option through much of the afternoon, before giving way to a solid evening caddis hatch that brought plenty of fish to the surface.

The recent bump in flows has the river in great shape heading into one of the busiest weekends of the summer, and we're expecting to see many people enjoying everything the Big Hole has to offer.
