Big Hole River 740 cfs—Maidenrock
There were lots of kids from surrounding communities at the annual Kids Day at the Meriweather Ranch. There were classes on fly casting, fly tying, entomology, water safety and finally all the kids were treated to a short float trip provided by local outfitters and guides. Vince from Helena (can’t remember his last name) had their undivided attention when he did the presentation on raptors especially when he brought out his live Great Horned owl and the raven which he was having a converstion with. All the kids in my boat were great and each was pretty proud of the fly they had just tied. They were treated to floating right under a bald eagle perched high in the branches of an over hanging cotton wood tree.
Fishing reports from yesterday were good and many on top water action with skwala and mayfly patterns. Temps are slowly rising and by the end of the week it will be in the 60’s.
I have heard conflicting reports regarding closing of that portion of river between Silver Bridge and Divide access during peak construction of the new dam. Most local outfitters have agreed to go along with the temporary closure for time frame and safety reasons. If you have any comments on this closure, I would like to hear them.
