Streamer Action

It was a bit cool this morning and the dry fly action was slow—real slow. We were in one of my favorite spots on the river and it just was not happening on top. It was cloudy and rather than do the nymph thing John agreed to try streamers. I showed him how to swing it through the seam and on his third or fourth cast the line jumped and he scored a nice fat 20 inch brown. In the next fifteen minutes or so we got two more just about the same size. The fly was just a simple #4 black weighted wooly bugger with grizzly hackle.

Mid day the top water action picked up but still was not great.
Late in the afternoon it got really good with big attractor patterns and the last hour of the trip was hot.

My girlfriend Linda over on Andros Island just e-mailed me and said she got her first bonefish on a fly rod and that now she is hooked. I was hoping that wouldn’t happen cuz when I left I told her not to worry about her fly casting but to really concentrate on poling the boat and to learn to be an expert at it. So now what’s gonna happen with two of us on the casting deck with fly rods at the ready and nobody on the poling tower? Things just do not go the way a person plans some times.

  1. I need to ship my wife down there to hang out with Linda. If that is what you call a problem then I’d like to deal with that one myself.

I bet you Hank could pole the both of you around. Then you get fishin’ and comic relief all in one shot.

  2. Al, I realize that this is going to be a very big problem…. I really don’t think there will be room for you too on the front deck, but if you think we could both manage a foothold there at the same time, then I think Erik hit the nail on the head. I know that Hank would absolutely love to pole us around all day long… wouldn’t you Hank? And can you just imagine all the comic relief that we would get? Anyway Al, I recall one time you told me all about how to pole a boat… but I can’t remember a single word you said, of course. At least I know that you know how, and that’s all that counts. Can’t wait til you get back here!

PS… thanks Erik… you bailed me out of that one!

  3. A good girlfriend is worth a little poling time. I’m not sure I’d want Hank around. Three’s a crowd:)

  4. Linda, As for the casting deck you know who is going to be on it. Don’t listen to Erik or any one else. That new pole I bought you fits your hand just perfect so get used to it.

  5. I know who’s gonna be on the casting deck… you bought me a new fishing pole?

  6. LOL; YOU KNOW DAMM WELL WHO’S GOING TO BE POLING MY FRIEND AND IT WONT BE LINDA. IT WILL BE JUST LIKE BEING ON THE BIG HOLE. AL ROWS AND THE REST OF US FISH. YOUR FIRST MISTAKE WAS BUYING HER THE NEW ROD MY FRIEND.

  7. way to go girlfriend!! keep working on the fishing and keep al on the poling. al, you need to work on the snorkeling and hopefully not in the full monty. OMG! miss you all

  8. Lulu,

Funny you chime in cause the other day I was talking to someone who had just been to Hawaii and that made me wonder how the house construction is going? Done yet? Hope all is well and we’ll catch you guys on Andros again. Oh, and got the skype set up on my laptop and ready to run it next trip, thanks for the tip!
